O glossário do Código Internacional de Nomenclatura Zoológica define taxon como: “A unidade taxonómica, nomeada ou não, i.e., a população ou grupo de populações de organismos que, geralmente, são inferidos por relação filogenética e que têm caracteres em comum que diferenciam a unidade (por exemplo, população geográfica, o género, a família, a ordem) das outras unidades do mesmo nível. O taxon inclui todos os taxa dos níveis inferiores e todos os organismos individuais.” , (o original em inglês, “A taxonomic unit, whether named or not: i.e. a population, or group of populations of organisms which are usually inferred to be phylogenetically related and which have characters in common which differentiate (q.v.) the unit (e.g. a geographic population, a genus, a family, an order) from other such units.
